Single camera- assignment 1 theory

Task 1
In this assignment I'll be talking about the single camera technique and where the single camera technique is shown in the scene. I'll be also be talking about whats real in the show or film and what isn't real. I'll be also be talking about how they did the editing, have they added in a fade in and out or are the shots quick or slow. Also the sound of people talking in the scene and music in the background etc. Plus the story. Does the story make sense or is it confusing.

What is a single camera technique? A single camera technique is when a production such as documentaries, dramas and comedies use just one camera for filming; every shot and angle is used with the same camera

What is realism? Realism is something that is real and that is used in the films and TV shows.

What is non-realism? Something that isn't real in the scene or on set.

What is non-linear? Non-linear is where the story isn't straight forward and doesn't make sense.

What is linear? Linear is where the story makes sense and is straight forward

The film I am going to talk about is Gladiator, and the scene I am going to talk about is the scene where the gladiator introduces himself to the emperor. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKn-Agk-yAI

In this scene the gladiator introduces himself to the emperor and things start to kick off as the emperor tries to kill Maximus, as Maximus threatened to kill him as the emperor murdered his family in cold blood. The problem for the emperor is that the people support him and that means the emperor can't kill him or he will lose the support of the people of Rome.

The reason why I particularly like this scene is because the way they have set up the scene in the coliseum and the acting how the gladiator stands up against the emperor.

Realism
The realism that is in this scene is the coliseum and with the crowd in the background. Plus the costumes to make the film as if it was set in the roman times when the roman were in control of the world.

Non-realism
The characters don't seem real as these are just made up characters but the events that are in this film are true about the Romans how they lived and what they did. Some people in the background of the coliseum wouldn't of been there. They've probably added CGI in the background to make it look like that there is alot of people there at the coliseum watching.

Non-linear
What isn't straight forward is why the emperor killed the mans family, and plus why the emperor is trying to kill him and isn't straight forward on how the emperor knows him. This makes people wonder what happened between them two and which makes people to carry on watching the film or find out from the beginning on what happened between the emperor and the gladiator.

Linear
What is straight forward in this scene is you can tell that the emperor murdered the main characters family as he is saying ''father to murdered son.Husband to murdered wife and i'll have my vengeance''. Which makes the scene because it builds up some intense feelings as what is going to happen next.

Editing
The editing in this scene was very quick and snappy to show it is very intense and nervous scene, knowing that something is going to happen in this scene. There are some bits in the scene where the shots cut to the beat of the music to show it is very snappy and quick scene.

Lightning
The lightning in this scene was very bright you could obviously tell that it was filmed out side as the sun was reflecting off their bodies and you call tel it was outside as the actors were sweating. The lightning of the sun was good to capture the actors shadows to make the outside look hot and warm.

Sound
The talking in this scene was very clear and the music was very deep and loud to show it is very intense scene and the music gradually gets louder and louder for when the emperor is making a decision to kill the gladiators or to let them live.

The office
The next single camera work I'm going to talk about is the BBC comedy show The office starring Ricky Gervais and Martin Freeman.

The reason I chose this comedy show is because there are many scenes with a single camera technique. There is one scene where Ricky Gervais is highering staff and he is consistently talking about the job and the camera is focusing on him at all times as the other actor has got the back of his head facing the camera.

This link here is a video clip of the office scene where David Brent (Ricky Gervais) is doing an embarrassing but a funny dance.

Realism
In the show everything seems to be real. As they have not used any CGI or any backgrounds or created a set to do the filming. They have highered out a building that does office and desk work. To show and to talk about life in the paper industry but with comedy to make everything light hearted.

Non-realism
Nothing seems to non-realism and everything seems to be real and life like, and has hasn't used any CGI or set up a scenery. Everything seems to be real as it is in a building and the characters etc.

Linear
What is straight forward that the story is about working in the paper industry and the office life, and also showing how workers get treated at work by their bosses and what it is actually like to work in an environment that does desk work.

Non-linear
With all the episodes it changes story, but I don't understand what each story is all about as they keep changing the story in each episode. Which makes the TV series confusing to watch.

Editing
The shots are long and the editing cuts are quick, plus the editing clips are slow. To show it is a calm and relaxing TV show, plus it is a funny comedy show.

Lightning
The lightning is very bright as the sun comes in from the background, as they will also use other lights to light on the main characters, and other characters that are mostly shown in the show.

Sound
The talking in the show is very clear and can understand the jokes better. The don't use many sound tracks such as music. They only use music at the beginning and at the end, and they use music during breaks.

Friends
Friends is a TV comedy show starring David Schiw immer, Matt Le Blanc, Mathew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow. It is a TV show about 6 friends who make each other laugh and show love to each other. The single camera technique is shown when they are in the apartments, in the coffee shop or out on the street, as they are not filming in New York city they are only filming on a set in America.

Realism
The realism in this TV show is the apartments and all the other sets, on they are set out as they don't use CGI. As the set is all hand made.

Non-realism
The non-realism is that it is not set in New York city, as the apartments were made on set and so was the coffee shop and other places that were hand made on the set.

Linear
What is straight forward is that the TV show is about 6 friends that love to spend time with each other and the show tells us what friendship is really all about spending time with the people you love.

Non-linear
Everything seems to make sense as it talks about the friends and their separate lives and how they feel happy with their lives by being with other people.

Editing
The shots are very mix as the shots are long and slow and short and quick. You also get the fade in and out editing, and you also get the fading into the other scene.

Sound
There is very little music as it is mostly at the beginning of the episode and in between breaks and at the end of the episode. You can also hear the crowd in the background laughing and cheering to show it is a comedy show plus some of the episodes have happy endings when the crowd are cheering.

Lightning
The lightning is mix as they use bright lights to show it is day time and dark lights to show it is the evening. So they mostly use lights to represent the time of day instead of using the lights to catch the actors and the actresses in the light to see them very well.
